Mixed fruit jam with no added sugar

Mixed Fruit Jam with no added sugar is a delicious and yummy one-pot Jam recipe. If you regularly eat store-bought jam, look at the ingredients in Jam or jelly and you will find an ingredient called Pectin. Though it is a natural ingredient in fruits, the commercial one is usually added in high proportions to get the jelly consistency. The homemade jam is made without using any extra pectin or any added preservatives or even good no added sugars.

I used to love eating the jam with Roti or toasted bread but couldn’t get enough of it (Hello Kissan Jam !! ?). We make so many varieties of breakfast items and chutneys that go with them, we rarely get a chance to enjoy the Jam.

This was my first time making a mixed fruit jam. I had a lot of fruits lying around and I have to use them before they go bad. So, I thought this was the easiest to use up a lot of them at once and enjoy my childhood favorite once again from my kitchen ?

Is Homemade Jam Really Better Than Store-Bought?

Homemade jam is easy to make, preservative-free, made with fresh fruits, no added sugar, you know this combination must be good right. Yes, it is healthy and definitely tastes better than store-bought.

You can pick fresh fruits of your choice, replace sugar with a better & healthier alternative like dates or agave syrup or coconut palm sugar or skip it altogether, and use any citrus fruit or lemon as a natural preservative. You can use some vinegar as well to extend the shelf life of your jam.

This homemade jam is made using seasonal favorites like stone fruits or summer fruits. I have added fruits that I have on hand (apple, mango, grapes, pears, and oranges) and instead of using regular refined sugar, I’ve used dates. This gets all the sweetness from the fruits and dates. Sugars and pectin that are naturally available in the fruits are good enough for the recipe to get the perfect jelly consistency.
If you are not using oranges you can add some lemon juice, zest of a lemon. If you have strawberries or blueberries just add them, they will give bright color.

You can make this with berries alone, like strawberry, blackberry, or even mixed berries, either fresh or frozen berries to make a mixed berry jam recipe aka bumbleberry jam or jumbleberry jam. They taste so good you never want to buy the jam again from stores.

Few Things to Remember

Always use clean, sterile, and dry utensils throughout the process, or else you will be risking the Jam quality and it may easily get spoiled. Sterilizing the Glass Jars or airtight containers is not a complicated task. It’s very easy to do at home. Read along.

Sterilizing the Glass Jars

Generally, Jams, pickles, homebrew are stored in clean and sterile glass jars. Mason jars are or sealed jars or any bottles with lids are a good choice. All you have to do is clean and wash the glass jars first and let the jars boil in hot water bath for 5-10 minutes. You need to boil them and not just sit them in hot water. After that carefully remove them and let them air dry completely. It is best to sun dry them if you plan in advance or just leave it over the kitchen counter to dry. You can use the sanitize option in the dishwasher too and that is equally effective. Once they are sanitized and dried completely they are ready to use.

How to Store Homemade Mix Fruit Jam

Canning Process or storing the jam is similar to any other recipes, once you make the jam, transfer to sterilised jars or glass containers. Since we are not using the commercial pectin to make the homemade jam, it is best to store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and extend the shelf life. Also, make sure you use a clean spoon every time you take the Jam from the container.

Without any further delay, let’s jump into the making process this yummy homemade mixed fruit jam with no added sugar recipe ?

  • 1 cup grapes seedless
  • 1 cup mango cut into pieces
  • 1 cup pears chopped
  • 1/2 cup orange peeled and cut into pieces
  • 1 cup dates medjool

Instructions

Preparation

  • Soak 1 cup dates in hot water for 30 mins.
  • Wash all fruits in running water thoroughly. Place them on a cutting board and cut into small pieces.

Method

  • Transfer the chopped fruits to a blender along with soaked dates. Blend everything until smooth.
  • Transfer the fruit puree to a heavy bottom pan or stock pot.
  • Cook for 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally until it reaches a jam like consistency. Keep the flame low to medium to avoid burning at the bottom.
  • Switch off the heat. Let it cool down completely and store it in a sterilized glass container.

Notes

  • Adding orange/lemon juice increase shelf life. Do not skip it.
  • Make sure your kid is not allergic to any of the fruits before you add it to this mixed fruit jam.
  • The quantity of the sweetener depends on the sweetness of fruits. Check and adjust before cooking and after pureeing the fruits.
  • Prepare in small batches and use a clean jar to store the jam.
  • If preparing the jam in large quantities, I would suggest sterilizing the glass jars in advance.
  • Check the jam consistency by place a spoonful of jam in a plate and cool it down. After cooling down, if no water gets separated then the correct consistency is good for a jam.
  • Keep it refrigerated and consume within a couple of weeks. But it stays fresh well for a month if handled/canned properly.
  • Servings and nutrition information is approximate
