sesame seed powder | Nuvvulu Podi | Ellu Podi with detailed video and photo recipe – a flavorful South Indian spiced powder ( condiment ) using sesame seeds. It is perfect as a side dish for idlis, dosa and uttapam. I like the nutty taste of sesame seeds and love to use them in curries.

Sesame seeds are packed with nutrients and add nice flavor to simple dishes.I generally like to stock up on chutney powders which is helpful especially on a busy weekday when there is not enough time to prepare a fresh chutney or sambar.

We need just a few ingredients to make this podi. The procedure also is simple as the ingredients have be fried and then ground to a fine powder. Making fresh spice powders at home is a great way to ensure that you are using fresh ingredients for making them.

This sesame seed podi stays well in an air-tight container stored in a cool, dry place for a couple of weeks. It goes great with idli and dosa. You can also serve it with rice and ghee / sesame oil.

This sesame seeds podi is healthy too as it has both sesame seeds and red chilies. Sesame seeds are rich in calcium and iron. They are also a great source of minerals like magnesium, copper and zinc. Also, they are a good source of dietary fiber.

In this recipe i have used any lentils for preparing podi, if you like we can also add lentils like chana dal, urad dal and cumin seeds. Dry roast the lentils and sesame seeds . And make spice podi.

Seasame seeds are used in a variety of Andhra vegetarian preparations like Pulihora, Nuvvulu Annam. The mingling of flavors is simply irresistable, making it one of my favorites podis. A must-have podi in my pantry!!

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Sesame Seeds
  • 4 or 5 Red chilies
  • Salt to taste

Instructions 

  • Dry roast the sesame seeds and red chilies and roast till it pops up and is golden.Set aside.
  • Cool down the ingredients completely then transfer to a mixer jar.Add required salt.
  • Grind to a slightly coarse mixture.
  • Cool down then store in a dry airtight container.

Notes

In this recipe i have not used any lentils to make this recipe
We can also use dry roasted lentils and garlic if you like.

How to make Sesame Seeds podi with step by step :

1.Dry roast the sesame seeds and red chilies and roast till it pops up and is golden.Set aside.

2. Cool down the ingredients completely then transfer to a mixer jar.Add required salt.

3. Grind to a slightly coarse mixture.

4. Cool down then store in a dry airtight container.
